Young Mensans Explore the Hall of Science
Guy Rosenschein
On Sunday, March 28, 1999, a group of Young Mensans met in Queens to visit the New York Hall of Science. We gathered in the lobby at 1:00 PM. Everyone must have been excited about being there because everyone was on time.
The visit started on the first floor with many hands on exhibits. Zach tried taking off on a bicycle powered fan and did not succeed. Nobody did since flying was not the purpose of the exhibit.
Then we all wandered through too many exhibits to describe here. We tried everything from optical effects to testing our strength. Heather enjoyed the shadow music exhibit. When she realized she could change the sound of the music by moving in front of a light she loved it.
We were given a very detailed lecture on the steam machine while watching one in operation. It goes without saying that the Young Mensans did well answering questions during the presentation. After we had been taught everything we needed to know about the steam machine we resumed our visit of the floor.
We went to the special effects show and we learned how stuntmen falling from tall buildings in the movies survive. The children enjoyed riding a dinosaur (I suspect it was not a real one.) We sent Liam first and since he was not eaten the other children tried.
The next presentation was the dissection of the eye of a cow. The procedure was very well explained. After a few more hands on exhibits we decided it was time to rest our feet and call it a day.
The New York Hall of Science is well worth visiting, a wonderful place of fun and learning for children... and adults alike.
