Young Mensans do IMAX at
Museum of Natural History
Guy Rosenschein
On Sunday, January 17, 1999, the weather was bad enough for everybody to stay home, but not the Young Mensans. We gathered at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.
Despite the size of the museum and its multiple entrances, we found each other and were able to attend the IMAX movie presentation at 2:30 PM. The film, African Elephant Kingdom, was excellent and our young people enjoyed it a great deal.
After that we entered the museum and found a tropical jungle. The room is large and shows, with detailed explanation, the life of the jungle with all the animals displayed. These animals were not real and were very quiet; the children enjoyed looking for them in their "normal" habitat, and the adults had a good time, too. The quality of this display is exceptional. (See Young Mensan Album Page 7 and Page 8.)
After walking through a few more rooms our youngsters got tired and we made a stop at the cafeteria. There we all had a well deserved and needed rest before resuming our visit with the dinosaur exhibit. Here again the quality of the display is outstanding and the explanations which we got from a short movie before entering this part of the museum were excellent.
By this time it was getting quite late and we started leaving the museum, one after the other.
I hope all the participants enjoyed this outing as much as I did, and I hope they will all come to our next event, tentatively scheduled for February 28, 1999, at the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium near Huntington, Long Island. Check MPhasis and the Young Mensans page about this.
In other news, the well known music television channel VH1 has invited Young Mensans to participate in a show. I am working on this right now (end of January, 1999) and the invitation is still open for boys and girls ages 6 to 13. |
