Getting to the party at the Staten Island Hotel
The Staten Island Hotel is convenient to downtown New York City, Long Island, the New Jersey Turnpike and Newark and Kennedy International Airports.
By Public Transportation:
From the Staten Island Ferry terminal take the S44/94 bus. (Buses with numbers in the 90's make Limited Stops along the same route.) Get off at the stop beneath the Staten Island Expressway on Richmond Avenue. The Staten Island Hotel is right across the street. (The S44 which only goes as far as Jewett Avenue does not go far enough. Take an S44 or S94 which goes to the Staten Island Mall instead.)
There are also taxis available at the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
By subway, take the R train to the 86th Street station. Exit the station on the same side as the train going to the Bay Ridge 95th Street station, which is the last stop. At street level, both the S53 and, ahead of it, the S79 have their Brooklyn terminal stop on 4th Avenue. Take the S79 over the Verrazano-Narrows bridge to either of the two stops inside the parking lot at the Staten Island Mall. Wait at the same stop for either the S44/94 or S59 to continue along Richmond Avenue. (The S79's Staten Island terminal stop is around the back of the Mall but you need to transfer in the parking lot, before the last stop.) The Staten Island Hotel will be on the right, just before where the Staten Island Expressway crosses above Richmond Avenue.
It is also possible to take the S53 over the Verrazano-Narrows bridge and transfer to either the S44/94 or S59 at different points along its route. Be sure to transfer to the bus which is heading towards the Staten Island Mall and realize that if you come this way the Staten Island Hotel will be on the left, just after where Richmond Avenue passes under the Staten Island Expressway.
From Manhattan there is also express bus service on the X10 and X17 routes on weekdays with only the X10 running once an hour until 9:00 PM on Saturday and no service on Sunday.
Get a MetroCard:
The fare on New York City buses and subways is $1.50 (until May 4, 2003,) with free transfers between many Staten Island buses. The fare must be paid with exact change, token or MetroCard; bills are not accepted. To get a free transfer between the subway and buses you must pay the fare with a MetroCard. If the fare is paid with a token or coins, you can only get a free transfer between non-express buses. MetroCards are available at most subway stations and many merchants.
You might want to consider buying a MetroCard FunPass which, for $4.00, gets you unlimited subway and local bus rides for one day. Unlimited ride MetroCards cannot be used on express buses.
