MERF Scholarships

The 1999 - 2000 MERF Scholarship Contest has ended. If you would like to be a judge in next year's competition, please send a note to Ruth Rosenhaus at the address below with your name, address, phone number, email address (if any) and field of expertise. The judging committee will meet one or two weekend afternoons in mid-February, 2001. You do not have to be a member of Mensa in order to judge essays.

The winners of the 1999 - 2000 MERF Scholarship Contest have been announced. As always, the contest was open to members and non-members of Mensa. High school teachers and college professors were encouraged to give applications to their students. The deadline for essay submissions was January 31, 2000. When it is available, an entry form for next year's contest will be reproduced in Mphasis, the newsletter of Greater New York Mensa. Otherwise, if you live in the Greater New York City area, please send a stamped self-addressed envelope to Ruth Rosenhaus at the address below. Please don't forget the stamped self-addressed envelope!

Note to out-of-town students: Under new MERF guidelines, the Greater New York Mensa Scholarship Committee can accept applications only from students whose legal or residential address is within our geographic area. Students outside of the Greater New York Mensa area should send a stamped self-addressed envelope, with a letter requesting an entry form, to the address below. MERF will send an entry form for the scholarship competition in the applicant's geographic area.

The 1998-1999 GNYM Winners

Greater New York Mensa offers hearty congratulations to the winners of the 1998-1999 MERF Scholarship Essay Contest, selected by the Mensa Education and Research Foundation's National Scholarship Program. GNYM had two winners:

David Gold, a junior majoring in Communications at the Cornell University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, won the Cooper-Mossip Award for Region 1, Local Group 100. Mr. Gold's career goal is to be the program director of a major metropolitan radio station.

Rachel Rubin Ladutke, who is pursuing an M.A. in Theatre at Hunter College, City University of New York, was awarded the Peggy Deane Memorial Scholarship for the performing arts. Ms. Rubin Ladutke, an experienced director, producer, and playwright, hopes to establish a performing arts school and community theatre.
